Abstract

The study examined the relationship between family violence and both extremism and intolerance among a Jordanian sample of 3,126 participants in light of selected demographic variables. Results revealed significant differences in family violence, extremism, and intolerance by gender in favor of males, and by age group in favor of adolescents. Differences in family violence and extremism were observed in favor of the very low economic level, while intolerance was higher among low and very low economic levels. No significant differences were found in family violence by place of residence; however, extremism was higher in camps, and intolerance in camps, villages, and Bedouin areas. Higher levels were also associated with lower parental education and with non-stable parental marital status (separated/divorced). A significant positive correlation was found between family violence and both extremism and intolerance.
