Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of employing the storytelling strategy in improving Arabic speaking skills among second-grade students in Jordan. The study sample consisted of 36 male and female students from the second grade. The sample was purposefully selected and divided into an experimental group (18 students) and a control group (18 students). The equivalence of both groups in speaking skills was verified using a pre-test. To achieve the study objectives, a quasi-experimental design was used. The researchers developed a teaching plan based on the storytelling strategy. The study instrument—a speaking skills observation checklist—was prepared and a teaching program based on storytelling was developed. The validity and reliability of the tool were confirmed using appropriate methods. The study results showed a statistically significant difference in the post-test between the experimental group, which was taught using the storytelling strategy (mean = 17.11), and the control group, which was taught using traditional methods (mean = 14.83), in favor of the experimental group. These findings indicate that the storytelling strategy had a positive impact on enhancing speaking skills among second-grade students. The study recommended the integration of storytelling as a regular instructional strategy in Arabic language lessons, especially in the early elementary grades. It also suggested developing training programs for teachers on how to design educational stories suitable for oral expression skills and implement them interactively.
